A Study on Robert Castel`s Theory of Wage-Earning Society and Social Right
Na Byong-Kyun

Abstract
The objective of this article is to analyze Robert Castel`s theory of Wage-Earning Society and suggest its theoretical and policy implications to Korea. Castel identifies that wage laborers emerged during the period from the end of 18th to the beginning of 19th century in Europe. Social property and social right are core concepts of the wage-earning society which had developed over the period. The rights originated from workers` demands and the state`s active roles to stabilize workers` status and secure the economic lives of workers by establishing social security systems. The wage-earning society and the social right are in crisis since 1980`s when the unempolyment of young workers has increased and the increase in the ``exclues`` has weakened the stability of wage-earning society. As a result, the socio-economic security of lives and the social stability of all members of European societies had been in crisis. Castel proposes active roles of the states and reforming social security systems as policy measures to overcome the crisis of wage-earning society and that of social right.
